How Backend Mode Affects Your Data

Hosted Server Mode

When you use the hosted translation server (the default), the following data is sent over HTTPS to our server:

Our server uploads the requested image content, translation instructions, and relevant recent context to OpenAI for text recognition, parsing, and translation. OpenAI returns recognized text and translated output to our server, which returns the result to your browser. Your page URL, general browsing history, account email, payment data, and anonymous extension ID are not included in the OpenAI request.

We have enabled OpenAI's API input and output data-sharing program. This means OpenAI may use the API inputs and outputs we share to identify usage patterns, measure model quality, and inform future model evaluation, improvement, and training. OpenAI asks customers using this program not to submit sensitive, confidential, or proprietary information and to have the rights and permissions needed for OpenAI to process and use the data. See OpenAI's data-sharing explanation and OpenAI's privacy policy.

Manga Translator Z processes page images and translated results in memory and does not store them permanently on our servers. OpenAI's handling and retention of shared API data is governed by OpenAI's policies and data-sharing program.

If you do not want manga content sent through our server to OpenAI, use Ollama or a self-hosted server. OpenAI BYOK sends content directly to OpenAI under the settings of your own OpenAI account.

Page counts are tracked to enforce plan quotas: Basic (100 pages/week), Day Pass (100 pages/24h), Starter (1,500 pages/month), Power (3,000 pages/month). The counter is keyed to your anonymous extension ID, or, if you create an optional account to raise your quota, to the email address you provided.

Local Server Mode

When you connect the Extension to a local server running on your own machine, all image data and translation processing stays entirely on your device. No data is sent to our servers.

Ollama Mode

When using the Ollama backend, images are sent to the Ollama instance running at the URL you configure (typically on your local machine). No data is sent to our servers. Your data handling is governed by your own Ollama setup.

OpenAI BYOK Mode

When using OpenAI with your own API key, images are sent directly to the OpenAI API using your key. No data passes through our servers. Your data handling is governed by OpenAI's privacy policy.

What Stays On Your Device

What We Do Not Collect

Note: This marketing website (mangatranslatorz.com) uses Google Analytics 4 to understand traffic patterns. The Extension itself does not. You can block GA4 via any standard tracker blocker.

What We Do Collect (optional)

Data Storage and Security

All locally stored data (extension ID, image hashes, settings) resides in Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.local API, which is sandboxed to the Extension and not accessible by websites or other extensions.

Communication with the hosted server and OpenAI is encrypted via HTTPS. Image data transmitted for translation is processed in memory and not written to persistent storage on Manga Translator Z servers.

Data Retention

Third-Party Services

Depending on the backend mode you choose, your data may be processed by:

The Extension does not contain a third-party advertising or analytics SDK. Paid conversion attribution is handled by our first-party website and hosted server using the latest eligible ad click.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use

In hosted mode, Manga Translator Z uploads requested page content to OpenAI because OpenAI performs the user-requested text recognition, parsing, and translation. We do not sell user data or use manga content, translated text, or browsing activity for advertising, credit decisions, or unrelated profiling. Apart from the OpenAI processing and model-improvement use described above, we do not transfer requested page content to other third parties. Manga Translator Z team members do not read requested page content unless you intentionally provide it for support, access is needed to investigate abuse or a security problem, or access is required by law.

Your Rights

Children's Privacy

The Extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly allow anyone under 13 to create a paid account.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes in the Extension's functionality. Material changes will be communicated through the extension update notes. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly.
